Erythroplakia of the cervix

Cervical health often remains outside our attention until alarming symptoms appear. But some changes, such as erythroplakia, can be not only unnoticeable, but also potentially dangerous. Let's figure out together what it is, why it occurs, and what to do if a doctor makes such a diagnosis. You will learn how to recognize the problem in time and maintain your health.

What is cervical erythroplakia?

Erythroplakia of the cervix is a rare but potentially serious condition. It is characterized by the appearance of a bright red area on the mucous membrane of the cervix. This area is formed due to thinning of the epithelium (the surface layer of cells) and exposure of the underlying blood vessels. This is why it looks red.

Erythroplakia requires attention because this condition is sometimes associated with precancerous changes. Although it does not always lead to cancer, it should not be ignored.

What is cervical erythroplakia?
Causes of erythroplakia

Erythroplakia of the cervix occurs due to damage and thinning of the epithelium (the top layer of cells) of the mucous membrane. The causes of this condition can be different and are associated with both external and internal factors.

The main causes:

  • Chronic inflammation - for example, cervicitis or vaginitis caused by infections
  • Hormonal changes - an imbalance of estrogens can weaken the mucous membrane
  • Mechanical injuries - damage after childbirth, abortions, use of intrauterine devices or rough sexual intercourse
  • Sexually transmitted infections (for example, human papillomavirus - HPV)
  • Exposure to chemicals - for example, with improper use of vaginal preparations
  • Age-related changes - with age, the epithelium becomes thinner and more vulnerable

How does this happen? Under the influence of these factors, the mucous membrane of the cervix loses its protective properties. The epithelium becomes thinner, the vessels are less protected, which leads to the appearance of red areas. Without treatment, the condition can progress.

Symptoms of cervical erythroplakia

Erythroplakia of the cervix often occurs latent, without obvious symptoms. However, in some cases, symptoms may still appear, and it is important to know them.

Possible signs:

  • Bloody discharge between periods or after intercourse
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse
  • Vaginal discharge of an unusual color, odor, or texture
  • A feeling of dryness or burning in the vagina
  • Drawing pain in the lower abdomen, especially without an apparent cause
  • Increased frequency of inflammatory diseases of the vagina or cervix

What else should you pay attention to? Erythroplakia is often discovered by chance, during a routine examination or diagnosis of other conditions. The doctor may notice an area with a change in the color or texture of the mucous membrane.

General information about the procedure

Diagnostics

The main diagnostic procedures:

  1. Examination on the chair. The gynecologist examines the cervix with a mirror. Erythroplakia looks like a red spot on the mucous membrane. If the doctor notices something unusual, he prescribes additional tests
  2. Colposcopy. This is an examination through a special device with magnification. Imagine a magnifying glass that helps the doctor examine even the smallest changes in the cervix. The procedure is painless and safe
  3. Test with Lugol's solution. During colposcopy, the doctor can apply solutions that “highlight” problem areas. For example, Lugol's solution stains healthy cells, and diseased ones remain light
  4. Cytology smear. A smear is taken from the surface of the cervix. In the lab, it is checked for altered cells
  5. Biopsy. If the doctor sees that the area is questionable, a small piece of tissue is taken for analysis

Doctor K+31's opinion: “Erythroplakia is a condition that can go on for a long time without obvious symptoms. A woman often feels completely healthy, but changes in the tissue are already occurring. For example, thinning of the epithelium and exposure of blood vessels can develop over several months or even years without causing pain or discomfort. If this is not detected in time, the area may become vulnerable to infections or develop into a precancerous condition.”

Treatment of erythroplakia of the cervix

Treatment of erythroplakia involves removing the affected area of the cervix. The main treatment options are:

  1. Diathermocoagulation. Cauterization with electric current. The affected area is heated, causing the tissue to be destroyed. After the procedure, a crust forms, which falls off after 1-2 weeks. The method is suitable for small lesions
  2. Cryotherapy. Exposure to liquid nitrogen. Low temperatures freeze and destroy the altered cells. Healthy tissue gradually grows in their place. The method is painless and does not cause bleeding
  3. Laser therapy. Removal of altered tissue with a laser. The beam evaporates the affected cells without affecting healthy areas
  4. Radio wave therapy. Using radio waves to remove the affected area. The procedure is almost painless and has a gentle effect on tissue. Suitable for removing large areas
  5. Surgical removal. In cases of large lesions or suspicion of serious changes, a scalpel is used. The procedure is performed under anesthesia, and the affected tissue is sent for analysis

After the treatment, the doctor will give recommendations for recovery: avoid physical activity, maintain intimate hygiene and refrain from sexual activity during the healing period.

Prevention

Prevention tips:

  1. Get regular gynecological checkups. Even if nothing bothers you, visit your doctor at least once a year
  2. Get smears for cytology. The analysis helps to detect precancerous and pathological changes in the cells of the cervix. It should be done once a year or as prescribed by your doctor
  3. Use protection during sexual intercourse. Use condoms to reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (for example, the human papillomavirus, which can cause changes in tissues)
  4. Get vaccinated against HPV (human papillomavirus). Vaccination protects against strains of the virus that are associated with the development of precancerous conditions of the cervix
  5. Follow the rules of intimate hygiene. Use gentle intimate care products and avoid harsh formulations that can disrupt the natural balance of microflora
  6. Avoid cervical trauma. Be careful when using tampons or barrier contraception. After childbirth, abortions or other interventions, be sure to monitor the condition of the cervix
  7. Monitor your hormonal levels. Discuss any changes with your doctor, such as menstrual irregularities or symptoms of hormonal imbalance

Important! Give up bad habits. Smoking worsens blood flow and slows down the healing of cervical tissue. Alcohol weakens the immune system, which makes the body less able to protect itself from damage and infections

Answers to popular questions

Experts' answers:

Can erythroplakia occur after childbirth?

Yes, childbirth can be a risk factor. Cervical trauma during childbirth, especially if there were tears or complications, can lead to changes in the tissues. If you have recently given birth, it is important not to miss preventive examinations.

Do I need to treat a small erythroplakia if it does not cause problems?

Yes, even small areas of erythroplakia require attention. Without treatment, they can progress or be associated with precancerous changes. The doctor will select a gentle method to solve the problem at an early stage.

Can erythroplakia return after treatment?

There is a risk of relapse, especially if the causes of its occurrence are not eliminated. For example, chronic infections, cervical trauma or smoking. Regular monitoring by a gynecologist helps to notice recurrent changes in time and prevent them.
