Epidemiology

Due to the many types of brain tumors, the incidence of the latter varies and depends on their type and the age of the patients
The incidence rate ranges from 10 to 15 cases per 100 thousand people
Among primary brain tumors, about 60% are malignant
The most common are meningiomas (22-23%), glioblastomas (24-25%) and anaplastic astrocytomas (20%)
About 10 - 30% of brain tumors are metastatic in origin

Reasons

The cause of the development of neoplasms currently remains unclear
It is assumed that genetic defects, which can be inherited, as well as the impact of unfavorable environmental factors, play a certain role in the development of tumors

Clinical manifestations

Clinical manifestations of brain tumors depend on their location in a limited volume of the cranial cavity. The effect of the tumor (volume or chemical) on certain areas of the brain or the destruction of brain tissue in the tumor area (due to the growth of the neoplasm) determines the primary (focal) symptoms.

The most common symptoms:

Increasing neurological deficit (usually muscle weakness)
General cerebral symptoms (headache - one of the early signs, dizziness, vomiting)
Epileptic seizures

Diagnostics

MRI of the brain with contrast - the main method
If necessary, the study is supplemented by special diagnostic methods: MR perfusion (assessment of blood flow), MR spectroscopy (assessment of the ratio of certain substances in the tumor in order to determine the approximate subtype of the tumor), MR tractography (construction of the brain pathways and the relationship of the tumor with these bundles), functional MRI (determination of the areas of the brain responsible for movement, speech)
Additional diagnostic methods: CT (assessment of changes in bones and anatomy of the skull), CT angiography (study of blood vessels), PET with various drugs

Neurosurgeon from God. I came to see him by accident - I was initially made an appointment with another neurosurgeon at the K+31 clinic. But fate is such a thing that it decided to send me to him. Before that, I had a consultation with another doctor in another clinic, but then I decided that a second opinion would not hurt and went to an appointment at the K+31 clinic. I had a hernia in my spine and my right leg was 70 percent numb. At the appointment, doctor Ramirez Altamirano Luis Alberto looked at all my pictures (MRI, CT, X-ray) and explained everything to me in detail.
