Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is a disease in which an excess amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) accumulates in the ventricles of the brain and the cerebrospinal fluid-containing spaces of the skull. The pathology can be congenital or acquired, and occurs in many neurological diseases and injuries of the central nervous system, both in children and adults.

About the disease

Epidemiology

The incidence of the disease is from 100 to 350 cases per 100,000 people.

The mechanism of hydrocephalus development can be of 3 types:

  • If too much cerebrospinal fluid is produced
  • The process of its absorption is disrupted
  • Obstacles to its outflow (circulation) develop

The main reasons:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (after falls, blows, accidents)
  • Cerebrospinal fluid infections
  • Inflammatory processes in the brain
  • Functional disorders vascular system (stroke, intracerebral hematomas)
  • Colloid cysts and intracerebral tumors
About the disease

Clinical manifestations

  • Decreased visual acuity
  • Never-ending headaches, dizziness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Constant fatigue, seizures
  • Deterioration of memory and concentration
  • Lack of coordination, decreased muscle tone
  • Limited eye movement

General information

Diagnostics

  • MRI or CT of the brain
  • Neurosonography (in newborns)
  • Ophthalmological examination (ophthalmoscopy)
  • Neuropsychological examination

Treatment

Conservative therapy allows only a temporary decrease in ICP (intracranial pressure) and improvement of the patient's condition.

Surgical treatment is the main method aimed at restoring the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, or creating alternative routes for drainage of cerebrospinal fluid from the cranial cavity.

  • Endoscopic ventriculocisternostomy of the bottom of the third ventricle
