Epidemiology

  • Stenotic lesions of the carotid arteries account for about 56% of cases of cerebral ischemia and cause up to 30% of ischemic strokes (IS)
  • Carotid artery occlusion occurs in only 1% of cases
Epidemiology

Reasons

  • Atherosclerosis is the most common etiologic factor of carotid artery occlusion
  • In case of arterial occlusion, the main cause of ischemic stroke is hypoperfusion (insufficient blood supply) of the brain tissue
Clinical manifestations

The clinical picture corresponds to the signs of ischemic stroke:

  • Weakness in the arm and/or leg
  • Numbness in the arm and/or leg
  • Speech impairment and/or understanding
  • Loss of balance, loss of coordination, dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Severe headache without any apparent cause or after severe stress, physical overexertion
  • Numbness of the lip or half of the face, often with a "distortion" of the face
General information

Diagnostics

  • Ultrasound of the brachiocephalic arteries
  • CT angiography of the brachiocephalic arteries
  • Direct carotid angiography

Treatment

  • Conservative treatment of ischemic stroke under the supervision of a neurologist
  • If indicated, surgical treatment is performed - the imposition of an extra-intracranial microanastomosis (EICMA)
