About the disease

Epidemiology

  • The incidence of spinal hemangiomas is from 11 to 27%
  • Spinal hemangiomas account for 28% of all skeletal hemangiomas, 2 to 3% of all tumors of the spine and spinal cord, and up to 29% of primary neoplasms of the vertebrae
  • Women are affected more often than men

Causes

The provoking factors are not well understood, one of the causes is vascular proliferation.

  • The vast majority of hemangiomas are asymptomatic (and are often an accidental finding during examination of other diseases)
  • Local pain, coinciding with the level of localization of the hemangioma, in 54-94% of cases is the first, often the only and, as a rule, the main symptom
  • In certain cases, the aggressive growth of hemangiomas into the spinal canal cavity is accompanied by pain syndrome and symptoms of compression of neural structures
  • Quite rarely, hemangiomas cause pathological fractures of the vertebrae with the development of pain syndrome and, in rare cases, neurological deficit
