What is dental restoration?

Aesthetic (artistic) restoration of teeth is a method of correcting defects after mechanical injuries, stopping caries, abnormal wear of teeth. This process involves the use of composite materials, ceramic or plastic overlays, dentures.

What is dental restoration?

Indications for dental restoration

Aesthetic restoration of teeth is performed in the following cases:

  • Destruction of dentin due to carious lesions
  • Chips and delamination
  • Dullness or discoloration of enamel
  • Natural wear of teeth due to age
  • Gaps between the front teeth
  • Loss of part of a molar as a result of a blow, car accident, sports injuries
  • Need to replace old, worn fillings

Often, aesthetic (artistic) restoration is prescribed to restore a molar after root canal treatment. The procedure is also performed to correct the shape and size of teeth, improving the appearance of a smile.

Despite being safe and painless, artistic restoration is not performed if the following restrictions are present:

  • Wearing a pacemaker
  • Bruxism or other forms of tooth wear that require prior treatment
  • Lack of oral hygiene
  • Age under 16
  • Incorrect bite

An allergic reaction to the materials used in the process is also considered a contraindication to the restoration procedure.

Types of aesthetic dental restoration

In Moscow, dental restoration is performed in two ways: direct; indirect. Direct restoration is performed in the patient's oral cavity. The doctor uses materials that harden under the influence of light. Indirect restoration involves the production of crowns or bridges in a dental laboratory. Prices for direct restoration are usually lower due to less labor intensity.

Direct method of tooth restoration

Suitable for restoring the front and side units using light-curing materials. It is effective in filling damaged areas and eliminating chips.

Indirect method of tooth restoration

The following elements are used to restore the original appearance of teeth:

  • Veneers are thin porcelain or ceramic plates that are fixed to the front of the molar
  • Lumineers are very thin ceramic overlays that are attached without preliminary grinding of the molar
  • Inlays are small prostheses that cover damaged areas. They reliably seal the tooth, are resistant to heavy loads, and last a long time

The cost of the procedure depends on the size of the damage and the selected material.

“If the patient is dissatisfied with the result of the restored teeth, it is necessary to consult a doctor. Further actions depend on whether enamel grinding was carried out before restoration. Usually, enamel grinding is performed if caries or other damage is detected on the teeth. To ensure that the filling holds securely, the enamel is treated with a special gel. Complete removal of the filling and returning the tooth to its original state is impossible in this case. The doctor can leave a thin layer of the filling so that the teeth are smooth and shiny,” says the dentist of the K+31 clinic.

General information about the procedure

Stages of restoration

Before the start of aesthetic restoration of the tooth, the patient is examined by the dentist. The doctor checks the oral cavity for bleeding gums, swelling of the mucous membrane, caries.

Stages of preparing a molar for restoration include:

  1. Cleaning from caries and damaged tissues
  2. Creating a form for the future filling
  3. Mechanical cleaning
  4. Opening the enamel tubules
  5. Isolation from saliva with a cofferdam
  6. Drying
  7. Installing the substrate, creating a base for the filling, applying an etching gel, introducing an adhesive

Then the aesthetic restoration is performed. It consists of the following stages:

  1. Installing a form (matrix) for restoring classes II, III and IV according to Black
  2. Step-by-step addition of composite material
  3. Hardening of each layer
  4. Removing the matrix and wedge, additional illumination at the root (for classes II, III and IV)
  5. Surface formation
  6. Correction of shape and bite
  7. Final grinding, polishing and glazing

It is recommended to visit the dentist every six months for a preventive examination and correction of aesthetic restoration. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day, use dental floss, avoid hard foods, do not open bottles with your teeth and do not gnaw nuts. In case of advanced caries, temporary restoration is first done, and then permanent fillings are placed.

Features of restoration of front and chewing teeth

When restoring front teeth, special attention is paid to the aesthetics of the smile. It is important that the color, shape, size and degree of transparency of the elements match the rest of the teeth to create a unified look.

The back chewing teeth experience great stress during eating. Their restoration requires the installation of fillings that are highly durable and resistant to abrasion.

The K+31 clinic uses advanced methods and top-quality equipment that ensure the reliability and long service life of restored teeth.

  • Restoration of front teeth. It is carried out using composites that have a natural look. If the tooth is badly damaged, the patient is given a crown: metal, metal-polymer, metal-ceramic or fully ceramic. (Installation of crowns is more expensive than regular restoration.)
  • Restoration of chewing teeth. Molars are important for grinding food, so the doctor recreates the exact anatomy of the chewing surface, taking into account the location of the tubercles and grooves. This approach prevents problems with the bite and possible problems with the jaw.
