Impedancemetry

Impedance testing helps evaluate the functioning of the middle ear, as well as the mobility of the eardrum and auditory ossicles.

This method does not measure hearing sensitivity. At the same time, it provides the doctor with important data about the state of the auditory system.

Impedancemetry technique

The process uses a compact, portable impedance meter equipped with a pump (regulates pressure in the ear canal), a loudspeaker and a microphone (records sounds reflected from the eardrum).

During the examination, the patient should not speak, chew or move. Also, before the procedure, it is important to make sure that the ear canal is free of wax plugs (if there are any, they are first cleaned).

There are 3 types of impedance measurements - tympanometry, acoustic reflexometry and the study of the function of the auditory tube.

Impedancemetry technique

Tympanometry

Tympanometry is used to assess the condition of the middle ear. This happens by measuring its response to sound and changes in pressure.

During the procedure, a special probe is inserted into the ear canal. It creates small changes in air pressure in the ear and produces sound. The device then measures how this sound wave reflects off the eardrum.

Changes in the reflection of sound allow the doctor to determine whether there is fluid in the middle ear. He also checks how well the eardrum moves and whether there is air or other abnormalities behind it. This information helps diagnose otitis media, tubo-otitis, and eardrum perforations.

Acoustic reflexometry

In the process of acoustic reflexometry, a specialist measures the reflexive contraction of the middle ear muscle in response to sound stimuli. Acoustic reflex analysis allows the doctor to learn more about the functioning of the auditory nerve. The procedure also helps diagnose various hearing disorders - for example, acoustic neuromas.

Examination of the function of the auditory tube

This technique is aimed at assessing the functioning of the auditory tube. During the process, the specialist asks the patient to perform swallowing movements or puff out his cheeks.

In this case, the pressure in the ear canal is changed using a special device. This allows you to evaluate how well the eustachian tube opens and closes.

Indications for impedance testing

Impedansometry is prescribed if the presence of serous or purulent otitis is suspected. Additional indications:

  • Neuritis of the facial nerve
  • Chronic problems with the eustachian tube
  • Chronic diseases of the nasopharynx
  • Hearing impairment after head injury
  • Congenital or acquired anomalies of the eardrum
  • Persistent ringing in the ears
  • Unspecified headaches

Diagnosis should also be carried out by people who often have to ask their interlocutor again and increase the sound volume on the TV. Impedance testing is also prescribed when selecting a hearing aid - in this case it helps to determine the degree of sensorineural hearing loss.

Preparation for research

No special preparation is required to perform impedance measurements. Typically, the study is carried out in a clinic, in the office of an ENT specialist.

You should have a medical card, a referral from a doctor and the results of previous tests with you.

Contraindications

Impedance testing is not prescribed against the background of active inflammation of the eardrum. Additional contraindications:

  • Pus discharge from the ear canal
  • Acute pain in the ear
  • Presence of foreign objects in the ear cavity
  • Presence of sulfur plugs
  • Recent ear surgery

Also, the procedure is not prescribed for children under 7 months.
