Pneumomassage

Pneumomassage of the eardrum is a procedure in otolaryngology in which a flow of air of a given pressure is applied. It is carried out for the treatment and prevention of hearing loss and hearing loss in ENT diseases or after injury, accompanied by ear congestion. At the K+31 clinic you can consult an otolaryngologist and sign up for a course of hardware vibration massage of the ears. The procedure is performed for adults and children.

Indications for vibration massage of eardrums

Pneumomassage of the ears is recommended for the treatment and prevention of hearing loss if the patient has the following diseases:

  • Tympanitis - inflammation of the middle ear
  • Adhesive otitis - adhesions and scars form in the middle ear
  • Sensorineural hearing impairment
  • Eustachitis, tubootitis - inflammatory process in the Eustachian tube
  • Meniere's disease
  • Presence of fluid in the tympal cavity
  • Recovery after hearing injury

The procedure is performed at an early stage of the disease and only after a comprehensive diagnosis using an otoscope.

Features of pneumomassage

The hearing organ consists of the outer, middle and inner ear, each of which has a different structure and function. Sound waves travel through the external ear canal into the cavity with the eardrum, connected by the Eustachian tube to the nasopharynx. Also in the structure of the device there are miniature bones that respond to sound vibrations. Normally, the tympal cavity, located behind the eardrum, contains air. This ensures a balance of pressure on both sides of the middle ear.

As a result of ARVI, otitis media or other inflammatory processes, the Eustachian tube becomes clogged with mucus from the nasopharynx, and air exchange is disrupted. Without air supply, a vacuum is formed in the tympal cavity and the eardrum is stretched. This leads to ear congestion. The inflammatory process provokes the accumulation of fluid in the cavity. If the pathology is not treated, pus forms in the middle ear, which leads to decreased and even complete loss of hearing.

During pneumatic massage, pulsed air flows are directed into the auditory tube. As a result of changes in pressure, the eardrum vibrates, its elasticity and mobility of the auditory ossicles are restored. This prevents the formation of scars and allows you to stop the adhesive process.

There are several methods of ear massage for otitis media:

  • Compression - helps normalize blood circulation and vascular tone, relieves swelling and fatigue
  • Vacuum infrasound - helps to normalize intra-ear pressure and relieve the inflammatory process
  • Mechanical or electrical action - used to restore the elasticity of the membrane, improve its mobility, remove purulent exudate from the tympal cavity

To perform vibration massage of the ear, the doctor can use a special device or mechanical action. The hardware technique has many advantages. During the process, it is enough for a specialist to set the necessary parameters of time, frequency and amplitude of vibration. Then tubes are tightly inserted into the ear canal, through which an air flow of alternating positive and negative pressure is supplied. When exposed to the eardrum, its movement is provoked.

During manual massage of the ears for otitis, the doctor uses a rubber bulb with a tube that works on the principle of a mechanical aspirator. A tip and an otoscope are installed in the patient’s ear canal. When the bulb is squeezed and unclenched, alternating pressure is created inside the ear. The method does not require the use of electricity, so it is available both in the hospital and on the go.

General information about the procedure

Contraindications

Pneumomassage of the eardrum is not performed during an exacerbation of otitis media, when pus has accumulated in the middle ear. In this case, drug therapy is first prescribed, and after stopping the infectious-inflammatory process, massage is prescribed.

Trest pneumomassage is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Barotrauma after deep diving
  • Pathologies and ruptures of the eardrum - excessive mobility, perforation
  • Exacerbation of an inflammatory disease, which is accompanied by high temperature, fever
  • Hypertension

A vacuum massage of the ear cannot be performed immediately before traveling by plane or diving, because... Pressure surges can injure the eardrum. If manipulation is carried out during purulent otitis, it can provoke a serious complication - otogenic sepsis. To avoid dangerous consequences, you should first undergo a diagnosis from an otolaryngologist.

Effect of the procedure

Eardrum massage is used in the treatment of various ear diseases, as well as to prevent the development of hearing loss in chronic otitis media.

Pneumomassage promotes:

  • Tonization of the muscles of the auditory apparatus
  • Improving local blood circulation
  • Prevent inflammation in the middle ear
  • Restoring the mobility of small bones and eardrum
  • Stimulation of movement and removal of fluid from the ear
  • Resorption of adhesions and scars on the membrane, restoration of its elasticity

Vibromassage for the ears helps to partially or completely restore hearing, as well as prevent the development of hearing loss due to repeated otitis media or sensorineural disorders of the hearing aid. The effectiveness of the procedure is noticeable after the first session, hearing improves, pain goes away.

How to prepare

At the initial consultation, the doctor makes a diagnosis, examines the auditory canal and, if necessary, refers the patient for tests or instrumental diagnostics to check the hearing. Before pneumomassage of the eardrum, children and adults should clean their ears of wax. The otolaryngologist selects a massage technique, depending on the type of problem and the stage of the pathological process.

How is vibration massage performed in the clinic

The procedure is performed by an ENT specialist in an inpatient or outpatient setting. The patient sits in a chair, holding his head straight.

Sequence of ear pneumomassage:

  1. Treatment of the external auditory canal using an antiseptic
  2. Setting amplitude, frequency and exposure time on the device
  3. Insertion of the apparatus tube into the ear. The tip should fit tightly into the ear opening and fit well to the walls of the ear canal
  4. The doctor turns on the device and monitors the patient's condition. In case of discomfort or pain, you can reduce the frequency and intensity of air oscillations of baropulses
  5. The device turns off automatically when the time set on the timer has expired
  6. The doctor takes out the tube and examines the ear

Normally, the procedure does not cause pain. The patient may feel buzzing, tapping, and jolting in the ear. Discomfort and pain can only be present if the device settings are incorrectly selected or if there is pus in the tympal cavity.

The duration of one session takes up to 10 minutes (one ear). The course of treatment consists of 5–10 procedures.
