Leukocytes in a complete blood count (WBC, Leuk)

The absolute number of leukocytes reflects the protective function of the body and the state of immunity. Their norm for a healthy person is 4-9*10⁹/l. An increase in these formed elements - leukocytosis - can be physiological and pathological. Leukopenia - a decrease in the number - is often a sign of pathology. Physiological and pathological leukocytosis

Physiological leukocytosis is observed:

  • After eating or intense physical activity
  • Before menstruation
  • In the third trimester of pregnancy
  • In persons with harmful occupational factors

Pathological growth of leukocytes is caused by:

  • Most infections (usually bacterial or fungal, less often viral)
  • Inflammatory process
  • Allergic reactions
  • Malignant tumors of the red bone marrow and lymphoid tissue (leukemia, lymphomas)
  • Introduction of parasites
  • Injuries (physical, thermal, electrical)
  • Myocardial infarction
Physiological and pathological leukocytosis
Leukopenia is a consequence of:
  • Exhaustion of the body due to starvation, serious illness
  • Severe purulent-septic conditions
  • Viral pathology
  • Autoimmune processes
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Bone marrow damage due to the toxic effects of certain drugs, poisonous substances or diseases
  • Radiation sickness

  • Deficiency of vitamins, minerals, protein
  • Lack of thyroid hormones and glucocorticoids
  • Some forms of anemia (for example, aplastic) and leukemia (leukopenic and aleukemic)
Leukocyte formula

For the purpose of differential diagnosis, the leukocyte formula is also determined – the relative number of different Leuk representatives:

  • Eosinophils
  • Band neutrophils
  • Segmented neutrophils
  • Lymphocytes
  • Monocytes

У нашей бабушки диагностировали заболевание крови, и несмотря на длительное лечение, результата не было. Мы обратились к Дубининой Юлии, потому что нужно было что-то менять.
