What is pharyngoscopy?

In the process, the specialist uses a special tool - a pharyngoscope. Having a light or camera at the end, it helps visualize the pharynx.

Its use allows you to obtain a clear image of the inner surface of the throat, identify inflammation, swelling, ulcers, abnormalities in the structure and possible foreign bodies.

What is pharyngoscopy?

Pharyngoscopy is performed against the background of chronic sore throat

Indications for pharyngoscopy
  • Labored breathing
  • Hoarseness
  • Loss of voice
  • Ear pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Nose (or throat) bleeding
  • Feeling of a foreign object in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
Contraindications
  • Severe swelling
  • Acute heart failure
  • Critical narrowing of the larynx or trachea
  • Presence of epilepsy
  • Presence of mental disorders
  • Having problems with blood clotting
  • Aortic aneurysm
  • Allergic reaction to anesthetics
Types of pharyngoscopy

There are 2 types of research. Direct pharyngoscopy involves the use of a rigid endoscope. This allows the doctor to directly examine the throat. Given that it is administered through the oral cavity, direct pharyngoscopy is performed under local anesthesia. It is usually used when the development of a tumor is suspected.

Indirect pharyngoscopy is performed using a mirror, which is also inserted into the oral cavity. This method is used to diagnose inflammation and check the condition of the tonsils.

Advantages of the method

The main advantages of this method are accuracy and the possibility of dynamic observation. That is, pharyngoscopy allows not only to diagnose the disease, but also to monitor the effectiveness of treatment.

General information about the procedure

Preparation for pharyngoscopy

Preparation for fibrolaryngoscopy includes an examination of the throat, an ECG, a coagulogram, as well as a general and biochemical blood test and a chest x-ray. In some cases, additional computed tomography is required.

If the procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, the patient should refrain from eating 8-10 hours before the start. That is, if the study is carried out in the morning, you are allowed to have a light dinner in the evening. In the morning before the examination, you should not eat or drink. In addition, it is recommended not to smoke several hours before the procedure.

If you are going to use local anesthesia and a flexible laryngoscope, it is enough to stop eating 3-4 hours before the examination.

How the pharyngoscopy procedure is performed

The first stage is preparation. In this case, you need to rinse your mouth well with an antiseptic solution. You will then need to sit or lie down so that the doctor can comfortably conduct the examination. After this, the doctor examines the pharynx, larynx and adjacent tissues. If a camera is used in the process, the image will be displayed on the screen. This allows the doctor to observe the condition of the pharynx in real time.

Upon completion of the inspection, the instrument is carefully removed. The entire process usually takes from 5 to 15 minutes - this depends on the complexity of the case and the type of pharyngoscopy.

Result

After pharyngoscopy, the doctor immediately provides the patient with the initial results of the examination. If any suspicious areas were found during pharyngoscopy, the doctor takes a biopsy for further histological examination. This is necessary to confirm or exclude the presence of dangerous pathological processes, including cancer.

Complications and rehabilitation

Pharingoscopy is considered a safe procedure, but sometimes a slight sore throat occurs (this is possible if the procedure was invasive). In rare cases, bleeding occurs (especially after taking a biopsy).

After the procedure, it is recommended to rest and avoid intense activity for several hours. You should also avoid very hot and cold drinks and solid foods. If unusual symptoms occur (severe pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding or fever), you should contact your doctor immediately.
