What is laser vasotomy?

The laser helps reduce or remove enlarged turbinates that are blocking normal airflow.

During the operation, the doctor directs a laser beam directly to the tissue that needs correction. This avoids unnecessary damage to healthy areas. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and takes on average 15-30 minutes.

What is laser vasotomy?

Benefits of laser vasotomy

The main advantage of laser vasotomy is minimal invasiveness.

The laser allows the procedure to be performed without incisions and stitches, and against this background, trauma to surrounding tissues is reduced. This helps reduce the risk of complications.

Answers to popular questions

Indications for laser vasotomy

Laser nasal vasotomy is indicated in cases where traditional treatment methods do not help. In 80% of cases, this procedure is performed for vasomotor, hypertrophic and allergic rhinitis.

Contraindications

The operation is not recommended for people with impaired blood clotting. Additional contraindications:

  • Serious mental disorders
  • Reduced immunity
  • Severe diseases of the heart, lungs and kidneys

The procedure is also contraindicated in patients with unstabilized diabetes mellitus.

General information about the procedure

Preparation

Before the procedure, the patient undergoes laboratory tests and consults with highly specialized specialists (a cardiologist or an endocrinologist).

2 days before surgery, you should refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol, and also stop taking medications that may affect blood clotting.

Since the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, the patient also needs to refrain from eating and drinking 3-4 hours before the operation.

How is laser vasotomy performed?

The procedure is carried out under local anesthesia: a gel or spray selected by the doctor is applied directly into the nasal passages.

Using a laser device, the doctor targets the enlarged areas of the nasal turbinates. The laser vaporizes excess tissue while coagulating (cauterizing) blood vessels.

Recovery after endoscopic surgery

During the first 2-3 days after the procedure, slight swelling appears, which can cause temporary nasal congestion. There is no need to use vasoconstrictor drops during this period: usually the swelling subsides on its own after a week. After this, nasal breathing normalizes.

During the first 2 weeks after surgery, you should avoid physical activity, visiting the bathhouse and sauna, as well as smoking and drinking alcohol. In order to reduce the risk of complications, it is important to regularly clean the nasal cavity using medications recommended by your doctor. You should also attend all scheduled post-operative check-ups.

The final improvement in breathing through the nose and restoration of normalcy usually occurs about a month after the procedure.

In some cases, the following symptoms appear after endoscopic surgery:

  • Increased bleeding
  • Increased pain or discomfort in the nose
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Unusual nasal discharge accompanied by an unpleasant odor

These signs usually indicate infection. If they appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.

How is an appointment with an otolaryngologist at K+31?

During the initial appointment, the doctor questions the patient in detail about complaints, clarifies the history of the disease, and lifestyle. Next, a thorough visual examination of the nose, pharynx, ear, and larynx is carried out. Special tests are prescribed to assess the acuity of hearing and smell.
