What symptoms should you consult an ENT surgeon for?

Surgical intervention is required if a person has chronic infections that often recur and are not treated with standard methods. Other indications:

  • Curvated nasal septum. This is an anatomical disorder in which the nasal septum (the thin wall between the nostrils) deviates from the center line. Main symptoms: difficulty breathing and recurrent sinusitis
  • Obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition in which the airways are partially or completely blocked during sleep. This leads to temporary pauses in breathing and decreased quality of sleep. In the long term, this leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases
  • Cysts. These are closed capsules (bags), usually filled with liquid or air. Cysts are often harmless, but often cause significant discomfort

Another reason to see a doctor is the presence of polyps. These are benign growths on the mucous membranes of the nose, which often cause nasal congestion. Also, if they are present, the sense of smell is impaired in 90% of cases.

Types of surgical interventions

The most effective treatment is laser surgery. Using a laser, a specialist removes small tumors and polyps. The main advantages of laser surgery are less bleeding during the procedure and faster recovery after surgery.

Main types of surgical intervention:

  • Tonsillectomy Surgical removal of the tonsils is performed when recurrent tonsillitis is diagnosed.
  • Adenotomy Surgery to remove adenoids (lymphoid formations in the nasopharynx) is often prescribed for children. It is performed when the adenoids cause recurring breathing problems.
  • Septoplasty Surgical correction of a deviated nasal septum is aimed at improving air flow.
  • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESO) A minimally invasive surgical procedure is performed to restore normal drainage and function of the sinuses. It is often used for chronic sinusitis. In the process, the doctor removes blocking tissue and abnormal structures in the nasal passages and sinuses.
  • Removal of polyps and tumors Surgical intervention is prescribed for the purpose of excision of neoplasms (polyps or tumors) in the ENT organs.
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) An operation aimed at eliminating or reducing the manifestations of obstructive sleep apnea. In the process, the specialist removes or modifies tissue in the throat area (uvula, soft palate) that blocks the air passages during sleep.
  • Tympanoplasty Surgery on the eardrum or middle ear is prescribed to restore hearing. Most often it is performed after injuries or against the background of chronic infections that damage the auditory structures.
  • Reconstructive surgeries The main goal of the intervention is to restore the appearance and functionality of the tissues of the face or neck after injury or surgical removal of tumors. During the process, the specialist performs tissue transplantation or implantation.

Methods of surgical treatment

There are several modern methods of surgical treatment in ENT surgery. Here are the main ones:

Microscopic surgery

The surgeon uses a specialized operating microscope. Thus, he is able to perform very precise surgical manipulations with minimal risk of damage to surrounding tissue. The method is especially valuable for complex operations on the auditory ossicles and nerves. It is also used to remove small tumors.

Endoscopic surgery

This is a minimally invasive surgical technique that involves the use of an endoscope (a thin, flexible or rigid instrument with a camera on the end). It is inserted through natural body openings or through small incisions. During the process, the surgeon observes the internal structures on the monitor and performs surgical interventions.

Robotic surgery

The technology provides the surgeon with an enhanced (3D) image of the surgical field. The main advantages of this method are minimal trauma, reduced blood loss, relative painlessness and relatively quick recovery.

Diagnostics in ENT surgery

The first stage of diagnosis is an examination of the ENT organs. Next, the doctor directs the patient to:

  • Audiometry. Intended to assess hearing function and determine the lowest intensity of sound that a person is able to hear at different frequencies. This test is performed using an audiometer. The device sends sound signals into the headphones at various frequencies and intensities, and the patient indicates whether they are audible. Using this diagnostic method, the doctor accurately determines the type and degree of hearing loss
  • Tympanometry. Testing the function of the eardrum and middle ear. Helps identify pressure problems in the ear

Computed tomography (CT) and MRI are also performed. Both methods provide detailed images of the structures of the head and neck.

Initial appointment with an ENT surgeon

The initial appointment with an ENT surgeon involves taking an anamnesis. In this case, the doctor asks questions about current complaints, the duration and nature of symptoms, as well as about past illnesses. It is important to tell him about all medical problems (including allergies) and medications you are taking. After this, the doctor refers the patient for additional examination, including hardware diagnostics.

The doctor then discusses possible treatment options with the patient. If surgery is required, the doctor explains the purpose of the operation and talks about the existing risks.
