When is it necessary to consult an ENT doctor?

Consultation with an ENT doctor is necessary for prolonged runny nose and nasal congestion. If these symptoms do not go away for more than a week, this often signals the development of sinusitis.

An ENT specialist can also help with breathing problems. You should be wary if they occur at night or during physical activity.

You should also consult a doctor if:

  • Pain and discomfort in the ears These symptoms are caused by infections, blood pressure disorders or inflammation
  • Constant sore throat Chronic pain is often a consequence of chronic tonsillitis, or pharyngitis
  • Voice problems Hoarseness and constant changes in voice timbre (as well as loss of voice) indicate diseases of the vocal cords
  • Frequent headaches If they are combined with nasal congestion, this indicates the development of an inflammatory process in the nasal sinuses

How does an appointment with an ENT doctor work?

A consultation with an otolaryngologist begins with a detailed conversation. During the process, the doctor asks the patient about symptoms and collects anamnesis.

This is followed by a physical examination, which includes:

  • Examination of the ears using an otoscope. This helps to assess the condition of the ear canal and eardrum, detect inflammation or other abnormalities
  • Rhinoscopy. This type of examination allows you to look at the nasal passages and sinuses
  • Laryngoscopy. Provides an opportunity to examine the larynx and pharynx. In this way, inflammation and neoplasms are detected

If a standard examination is not enough, the otolaryngologist prescribes additional diagnostic tests.

For example, audiometry is prescribed to assess hearing. During the process, the patient listens to various sounds through headphones. The main task is to indicate when he hears them. The results help the doctor determine the extent and type of hearing loss.

To obtain detailed images of the internal structures of the head and neck, the patient is sent for a computed tomography scan. This method is used when it is necessary to study the condition of bones, sinuses and soft tissues.

MRI is used to create detailed images of the soft tissues of the head and neck. This procedure is recommended if there is a suspicion of tumors that are difficult to see on CT.

Based on the collected data, the specialist draws up a treatment plan. In order to monitor the progress of therapy, the specialist prescribes several repeated appointments.
