Mammography traditionally refers to a non-invasive method of examining the mammary glands using X-rays (X-rays). How to prepare for this procedure, and what are the features of the study?
Preparing for mammography
Mammography is indicated as part of a screening examination of women over 40 years old, regardless of the presence or absence of complaints. Also, mammography is a method of primary diagnosis in identifying formations in the mammary gland as part of a medical examination.
What should be done before coming to the clinic?
- Choose the optimal period: although mammography can be performed throughout the entire menstrual cycle, the optimal time is considered to be a week after the end of menstruation, when the breast is the least painful and sensitive.
- Exclude the use of creams, antiperspirants, lotions in the area of the mammary glands and armpits: they may contain particles that will distort the image.
- Find the results of previous mammographic studies, if they were carried out: with their help, the radiation diagnostician will be able to assess the dynamics.
What should be done immediately before the study?
- Tell the diagnostician about pain and lumps, if any.
- Remove neck jewelry.
The procedure does not require any restrictions in the normal course of the day and takes only a few minutes.
Features of mammography
Pictures are taken in two projections (direct and oblique) for both mammary glands. If necessary, the doctor can take a photograph in an additional projection - to clarify the nature of the changes identified in standard images.
In order to obtain an image, the mammary glands are located on the detector (where the image is formed) and compressed (literally for a few seconds) with a pressure plate. At this time, a picture is taken. Then the procedure is repeated in the next projection.
X-ray of the mammary glands assumes minimal radiation, therefore it is absolutely safe for the body.
