Flu vaccination

The coronavirus pandemic became a test for all of humanity in 2020. People around the planet are now asking questions about how to reduce the risk of infection. Meanwhile, against the backdrop of a pandemic, one should not forget about another dangerous disease - the flu.

Statistics

The incidence of influenza and ARVI in the general structure of the incidence takes the first place and accounts for 95% of the total number of diseases. Analyzing the incidence of influenza and SARS, it should be noted that there are more cases in those regions where immunization is less.

Influenza is a controllable infection since 1940, that is, thanks to timely vaccination, you can significantly reduce the risk of infection and the severity of complications from the disease. In Russia, immunization is constantly growing; according to Rospotrebnadzor, about 43 million Russians were vaccinated in 2019.

Need a flu shot

Against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, influenza vaccinations can and should be done. Thanks to timely vaccination, a person's risk of contracting influenza decreases in the most dangerous period - late autumn, winter and early spring. In addition, the risk of reduced immunity decreases, and, as a result, the likelihood of infection with other viruses.

Influenza is dangerous for its complications, both from the lungs and from the central nervous system. Influenza is especially severe in young children, people with chronic diseases and the elderly.

Vaccination result

The vaccine induces the formation of a high level of specific immunity against influenza. The protective effect after vaccination usually occurs after 8-12 days and lasts up to 12 months, incl. in the elderly. Protective titers of antibodies to influenza viruses after vaccination of persons of different ages are determined in 75-95% of the vaccinated.

Immunological memory increases and the body's resistance to other infections increases due to the correction of the immune status.

Who can be vaccinated?

The vaccine can be given to adults and children, but a specialist consultation is required before vaccination. Due to the variability of influenza viruses, the composition of the vaccines is updated annually, therefore, the vaccine must be done every year.

The vaccine is especially indicated for persons at high risk of complications in the case of influenza:

  • Over 60 years old, preschool children, schoolchildren.
  • Adults and children, often ill with acute respiratory infections, suffering from chronic somatic diseases, incl. diseases and malformations of the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and broncho-pulmonary system, bronchial asthma, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, metabolic diseases, autoimmune diseases, allergic diseases (except for allergy to chicken protein), chronic anemia, congenital or acquired immunodeficiency , HIV-infected.
  • The vaccine is also indicated for persons by occupation who have a high risk of contracting the flu or infecting others with it, including: health workers, employees of educational institutions, social services, transport, trade, police, military personnel.
