What is photoepilation?

The photoepilation method is based on the use of intense pulsed light (IPL) technology. During the procedure, a device is used that emits light flashes. This process is called “photothermolysis”.

PRP

Benefits of photoepilation

Since the hair is removed along with the roots, the effect lasts for up to two to three years. This allows you to forget about the problem of unwanted hair for a long time.

Other advantages of photoepilation of legs:

  • Comfortable procedure. During photoepilation, the sensations are reduced to only a slight tingling. For this reason, anesthesia before the procedure is not required
  • Safety. The risks of skin damage during the process are minimized

All these advantages are relevant only if the procedure is performed correctly. Therefore, you should choose a clinic very carefully.

General information about the procedure

Preparation for the procedure

The hairs should be no longer than 1 cm, so the treatment area should be shaved 2-3 days before the session. The skin should be undamaged, so shave carefully. Stop using scrubs 3 days before the procedure.

Additional recommendations:

  • During all procedures, avoid using products that increase the skin's sensitivity to light (this applies to products that contain retinol and various acids)
  • Removing hair from the root before and during the course is unacceptable. That is, waxing and sugaring are prohibited
  • A month before the start of the course, you cannot sunbathe either in the sun or in a solarium. 4 weeks before the session, stop using self-tanning and chemical peeling. This helps prevent the risk of burns
  • If you are taking medications that increase the photosensitivity of the skin, you must either refuse the session or temporarily stop taking the medications for the duration of the course

You cannot bleach the hairs before the session. This is due to the need to maintain the contrast between the skin and the hair. The darker the hairs, the better they absorb light energy. Against this background, the effectiveness of the procedure increases.

Photoepilation stages

The procedure begins with a consultation with a cosmetologist and dermatologist. Then the client receives protective glasses to protect the eyes from bright flashes of light. Next, a protective gel is applied to the area of the skin to be treated. This helps prevent overheating.

The light pulse is aimed at the hair follicles that are in the active growth phase. The effect is carried out through the hairs containing dye (melanin). It absorbs light and converts it into heat. After such exposure, the follicle goes into a dormant state, the hair becomes thinner and eventually stops growing.

The entire procedure on the selected area takes 5-10 minutes. Upon completion, the doctor carefully removes the remains of the gel and applies a soothing and moisturizing cream. This helps prevent inflammation, peeling and itching.

Result of the procedure

One procedure allows you to get rid of about 25-40% of unwanted hair. After 10-14 days, 50-60% of hair falls out. The procedure has a cumulative effect: with each subsequent session, the remaining hair is removed. The skin becomes smooth, hyperpigmentation in the armpit area goes away, black roots disappear.

Care after the epilation procedure

Basic rules for skin care are presented in the table.

Recommendation Compliance period Explanations
Apply light gels to the skin. Fatty oils and creams are not suitable for care 1 week After epilation, the pores expand. Oily products can clog them
Avoid visiting baths, swimming pools and saunas 1 week The skin after the procedure is susceptible to infection. Visiting public water bodies and steam rooms can lead to the penetration of microbes into the treated area
Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area. Use sunscreen with SPF of at least 50 1 week before and after the procedure Epilation affects melanin, so it is important to protect the skin from factors that increase pigmentation
Avoid aggressive hormonal therapy During the course of procedures Hormonal changes affect hair growth. Against this background, the effectiveness of epilation decreases

In addition, you should not use wax epilation and an electric depilator, as this can damage the hair follicles. Also, experts do not recommend using aerosol antiperspirants and cosmetics containing alcohol. Such products provoke the appearance of pigment spots on the treated areas of the skin.

Indications and contraindications

This technology is suitable for men and women who want to remove hair from certain areas of the body. The main indications include hirsutism (coarse hair on the face, chest, back, abdomen) and high sensitivity of the skin, prone to irritation when shaving.

One of the main contraindications to photoepilation is skin allergy. Additional contraindications:

  • Heart and vascular diseases
  • Herpes and other skin rashes
  • Varicose veins
  • Skin tumors (malignant, benign)
  • Acute inflammatory processes
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Presence of implanted electronic devices
  • Presence of tattoos on the treated area
  • Endocrine diseases
  • Recent tanning
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Skin pigmentation disorders

Also contraindications are open wounds, cuts, abrasions, burns, bruises, acne and other skin damage. In addition, the intervention is not recommended for people under 18 years of age.

Is it possible to attend photoepilation sessions with a diagnosis of AIT (autoimmune thyroiditis)? The doctor answers: “Attending photoepilation sessions for autoimmune thyroiditis is allowed if the TSH level is within normal limits. If you regularly take medications (in particular, euthyrox) and have recently consulted an endocrinologist who did not reveal additional complications, photoepilation can be done.”

Answers to popular questions

Doctors and cosmetologists from “K+31” have addressed the most pressing questions about photoepilation.

Is photoepilation safe? Are complications possible?

Photoepilation is absolutely safe. The process uses modern equipment that allows you to fine-tune the necessary parameters. This minimizes the risk of side effects. Complications are unlikely, but if you do not follow the doctor's recommendations, slight redness may appear.

How often should you undergo the procedure?

The frequency of photoepilation sessions depends on the characteristics of your skin and hair structure. Usually, the procedure is performed once every 4-6 weeks. On average, the course consists of 6-8 procedures. The exact number of sessions is determined by the doctor.

Is photoepilation painful?

Photoepilation is usually accompanied by minor discomfort. The sensations vary depending on the sensitivity of the skin, but most clients feel a slight burning (tingling) or warmth. Clients rarely experience pain. However, if the skin is hypersensitive, a doctor at a clinic with a good rating offers additional methods of pain relief.

Is photoepilation suitable for all skin types?

Photoepilation is effective for most skin and hair types. The best results are seen in people with fair skin and dark hair.

Can I use wax to remove hair between photoepilation sessions?

No. During the photoepilation course, any hair removal methods that involve plucking should be avoided (this applies in particular to waxing and sugaring). This is because the hair follicles are damaged in the process. If necessary, you can use only a razor.
