What is laser scar resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing of scars and sutures is aimed at improving the appearance and texture of skin that has scars.

The process uses a special medical device that emits short pulses of light. This light penetrates the upper layers of the skin and removes damaged cells. This stimulates the production of new collagen (a protein responsible for the elasticity and smoothness of the skin).

PRP
Indications for laser resurfacing

The laser resurfacing procedure is used to treat various types of skin defects. The main indications for laser resurfacing of a scar or suture include:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Acne
  • Scars or marks after acne (post-acne)
  • Striae (skin stretch marks)
  • Fine wrinkles

Laser resurfacing of scars can significantly transform the appearance of the skin from the first time. The full effect appears only after the end of the course of treatment and after several months.

Contraindications

Laser scar resurfacing is not performed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This temporary restriction is due to changes in hormonal balance.

Additional contraindications:

  • Exacerbation of inflammatory processes
  • Malignant neoplasms in the treatment area
  • Recently performed (less than 2 weeks ago) chemical peeling
  • Psoriasis
  • Atopic dermatitis during an exacerbation
  • Epilepsy
  • Recently acquired tan

It is also not recommended to perform laser scar resurfacing on exposed areas of the body before traveling to hot countries. This is due to the fact that the treated skin is especially vulnerable to UV radiation. Exposure to sunlight increases pigmentation and slows down the healing process. Therefore, October-March is considered the most suitable time for laser correction of the face.

General information about the procedure

Laser used

The Fotona and Eraser lasers are used in the resurfacing process. The ERASER-C-RF carbon dioxide device is used to correct scars and pigment spots. The effect of its use lasts from 1 to 2 years.

The Fotona fractional laser allows you to remove up to 100 microns of the upper layer of skin. It helps reduce wrinkles, smooth the skin and stimulate the renewal of collagen and elastin. Due to the adjustment of the thermal effect, this model ensures rapid recovery. The risk of pigmentation is minimal. The resurfacing effect of this device lasts for 1-3 years.

Preparation

There are no special restrictions before the innovative resurfacing procedure. However, experts strongly recommend avoiding solariums and direct sunlight for 2 weeks before the session. You should also:

  • Stop taking medications containing vitamin A (isotretinoin, retinol). These substances make the skin more sensitive to the effects of the laser. Against this background, the risk of inflammation and hyperpigmentation increases
  • Avoid cosmetics containing retinoids (for example, tretinoin, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide). These ingredients also increase the skin's sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. As a result, side effects appear - redness, peeling and pigmentation

If it is impossible to completely avoid sun rays after resurfacing, it is recommended to limit the time in the sun. In this case, it is imperative to use a sunscreen with SPF 50+

Laser scar resurfacing stages

Laser resurfacing is not difficult, but requires the use of general or local superficial anesthesia. Correction is carried out by continuous exposure to the affected area. The process looks like this:

  1. Skin preparation. The cosmetologist cleanses the skin from dirt using a soft gel
  2. Pain relief. The anesthetic is administered through a vein
  3. Equipment setup. The doctor sets the parameters of the device (power and depth of beam penetration)
  4. Skin treatment. Before turning on the laser, the skin is treated with an antiseptic. After exposure to the device, the specialist applies a healing agent to the skin

The duration of laser resurfacing of sutures varies from 15 to 40 minutes. After the procedure is completed, the patient leaves the clinic.

Results of the procedure

After polishing scar marks, the skin texture improves, the visibility and depth of the mark decreases.

Additional effects:

  • Stimulation of collagen (it promotes natural restoration and thickening of the skin)
  • Reduction of pigmentation
  • Restoration of skin color

Also after polishing, patients notice a decrease in the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.

Rehabilitation and care after the procedure

The recovery period after laser resurfacing lasts for 1 week to 1 month. During this time, the following general rules should be followed. The main recommendations are as follows:

  • Do not wash your face in the first days after the session
  • During recovery, do not apply peels, scrubs or other aggressive products to your face
  • Stop using decorative cosmetics until the skin is completely healed (until the crusts and peeling disappear)
  • Use moisturizing creams with a light texture
  • Sleep on your back in the first 2-5 days after the procedure
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature
  • Avoid visiting solariums, saunas and swimming pools
  • Limit physical activity

At the first stage of recovery, the process of regeneration of damaged areas of the skin begins. During this period, the following symptoms are observed: swelling, redness, crusting and peeling.

During this same period, patients experience discharge in the areas affected by the laser. How normal is this? Here's what the doctor says: "If on the 4th-5th day after laser resurfacing, a fluid similar to lymph is released under the crust (sometimes mixed with blood), this is normal. In order to prevent the spread of infection, it is recommended to use Chlorhexidine. Also, 2 times a day, you should apply Levomekol ointment - this will help soften the crusts and provide an antiseptic effect."

At the second stage, the skin begins to return to normal. During this period, you need to protect your skin from the sun and moisturize it generously. Gradually, you can return to your usual care (but without aggressive products). In order to speed up the skin restoration process, you can additionally undergo restorative injection procedures (mesotherapy or biorevitalization).

Other types of scar removal techniques

There are several alternatives to laser scar resurfacing. A detailed description of all skin treatment methods is presented in the table:

Treatment method Description
Drug treatment Use of enzyme injections (lidase, hyaluronidase, longidase), corticosteroids (kenalog, diprospan)
Local remedies Specialists allow the use of ointments (contractubex, mederma) during the day
Physiotherapy Iontophoresis with enzymes, phonophoresis with corticosteroids, shock wave therapy for scar destruction
Cryotherapy Treatment with ultra-low temperatures using liquid nitrogen. This causes hypothermia and frostbite of the scar
Laser therapy Fractional photothermolysis with an argon apparatus. It is done in combination with corticosteroids. A total of 1-3 procedures are performed
X-ray therapy Used for severe keloid growth. "Soft" X-rays are used
Surgical methods Deep removal of the scar on the skin is performed with subsequent application of cosmetic sutures. If necessary, reconstructive plastic surgery is then prescribed
