What is laser facial resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is an effective and safe method of aesthetic medicine. This rejuvenating procedure is performed using specialized equipment. The process uses a targeted beam, with which the specialist removes the upper layer of the dermis.

PRP
Indications for laser facial resurfacing

There are several indications for laser skin resurfacing of the face. These include:

  • Acne and post-acne (scars and marks)
  • Shallow wrinkles
  • Sagging skin
  • Enlarged pores
  • Vascular networks up to 4 mm deep and up to 2 mm in diameter
  • Hyperpigmentation

Resurfacing also helps to eliminate traces of burns and other post-traumatic changes.

Contraindications

In some cases, laser skin resurfacing of the face is not performed. Here are the main contraindications:

  • Inflammatory processes in the active phase
  • Diabetes
  • Oncology
  • Viral infections
  • Convulsive disorders (epilepsy)

It is recommended to postpone resurfacing if you are taking retinoids (vitamin A derivatives). Treatment should be started no earlier than 6 months after stopping taking these drugs

General information about the procedure

Equipment used

Specialists use two types of facial lasers: Fotona and Eraser C CO2.

The ERASER-C-RF carbon dioxide laser accurately and carefully affects selected areas of the skin. The kit includes 3 attachments. A fractional attachment is used to work with scars, pigmentation and stretch marks. The effect of using such a laser lasts 1-2 years.

The Fotona fractional laser is designed to remove the upper layer of skin (up to 100 microns). Its use involves the use of cold and hot ablation methods. It is intended for:

  • Reducing wrinkles and scars
  • Skin smoothing
  • Achieving a lifting effect (this occurs due to the activation of new collagen and elastin fibers)

FT grinding can be adapted to various thermal effects. This helps stimulate the formation of new collagen.

Comparative characteristics of both models are presented in the table:

Characteristic Fotona Eraser C CO2 laser
Laser type Fractional erbium Fractional CO2
Penetration depth Medium Deep
Procedures Rejuvenation, peeling Scar removal, rejuvenation
Features Soft impact on accessible areas of the face, fast recovery Intensive impact, long-term recovery
Additional Eye and lip attachments Adjusting the depth of impact

The choice of device depends on the condition of the skin and the specific tasks that need to be solved.

Preparation

The best time for laser facial rejuvenation is the fall-winter season: it is at this time of year that solar radiation is less intense. As a result, the risk of pigment spots is reduced, and recovery after the procedure is faster.

Facial resurfacing is intense. Therefore, it requires careful preparation. A month before the procedure, it is necessary to use serums with antioxidants and moisturizing creams with hyaluronic acid and ceramides. The use of these products allows you to enhance the protective and restorative properties of the skin.

2 weeks before laser facial rejuvenation, you should avoid direct exposure to sunlight. It is also recommended to enhance skin protection. To do this, you should regularly use sunscreens with a high level of UV filtration. 2 days before resurfacing, you must give up decorative cosmetics.

Before the procedure itself, you need to:

  • Conduct a comprehensive facial cleansing. This is necessary to remove dead skin cells
  • Undergo light chemical peels. This helps prevent pigmentation after laser and reduce recovery time

On the day of polishing and the following day, you must exclude alcohol from consumption. During this period, you should also avoid cosmetics with acids and retinol. You also need to actively protect your facial skin from the sun using products with SPF (at least 30).

Laser Face Resurfacing Stages

Facial treatment begins with a preliminary examination and consultation with a dermatologist. The following stages are as follows:

  1. Makeup removal (if necessary) and facial cleansing. The specialist thoroughly cleanses the skin and treats it with a disinfectant
  2. Pain relief. A local anesthetic is applied. It usually lasts for 30-60 minutes. After its effect wears off, the remaining anesthetic is removed and a gel is applied to the skin of the face
  3. Resurfacing. The dermatologist uses laser radiation. The rays penetrate the dermis to the required depth. They effectively renew it and stimulate the formation of new collagen fibers

In general, resurfacing takes 20-30 minutes. After the procedure, the dermatologist applies a cream that soothes the skin. The specialist then provides the client with instructions for further facial care.

Results of the procedure

The facial rejuvenation procedure using grinding has several advantages. In particular, after grinding, the skin of the face becomes more elastic, smooth and radiant. Fine wrinkles and age spots disappear, pores become narrower, and a noticeable tightening effect appears.

Additional advantages:

  • The results of the procedure last for 2-3 years
  • Laser exposure is precisely targeted at areas with imperfections. Due to this, the risk of damage to healthy areas of the dermis is minimized

Recovery after laser exposure takes an average of 10 days. Over time, the quality of the skin improves. This is due to the fact that the collagen regeneration process continues after the session. Against this background, the skin becomes more elastic and smooth.

After the procedure, a slight redness appears on the skin. It is often accompanied by swelling and itching. These symptoms disappear within 1-2 weeks.

Rehabilitation and care after the procedure

Immediately after laser resurfacing, unpleasant sensations appear - in particular, burning and pain. The skin becomes hot and acquires a bright pink hue.

Swelling increases during the first day. The secreted lymph hardens, crusts form, and then (approximately on the 3rd day) the pain begins to decrease.

To reduce the intensity of these symptoms, after skin resurfacing it is necessary to:

  • Refrain from washing (the first 3-4 days)
  • Avoid sleeping with your face in the pillow (during the first week)
  • Limit the use of decorative cosmetics (until complete healing). Avoid cosmetics with acids and retinol for 6 months
  • Do not pick off crusts and protect your skin from the sun (for 1 month)
  • Abstain from alcohol, smoking, intense exercise and visiting a sauna (1-2 months)

Starting from the 4th day, you can wash your face with mild products. For this, you should use, for example, thermal water. After 7 days, you should continue to moisturize your skin with special creams and serums. Before going outside, you should apply sunscreen to your skin.

Advantages of laser resurfacing

The resurfacing procedure offers many benefits. They look like this:

  • Slowing down the skin aging process. Using a laser removes the top layer of skin. This stimulates cell renewal and the production of collagen, a protein responsible for the elasticity and youthfulness of the skin.
  • Skin texture smoothing. The laser effectively reduces the visibility of scars, acne scars, post-acne and age spots on the skin. Deep scars are reduced after several sessions. Acne and fine wrinkles disappear after the first procedure.

Activation of internal processes in the dermis promotes skin renewal. As a result, skin pores become smaller and cleaner, its color improves.

Answers to popular questions

Doctors from the K+31 clinic answered the most frequently asked questions about facial resurfacing.

Does laser resurfacing cause severe burns on the skin?

Provided that resurfacing is performed by a qualified specialist using the appropriate equipment, this does not happen. Ablative resurfacing (it involves removing the top layer of skin) involves controlled thermal action, which is necessary to get rid of scars, acne and wrinkles. The softer non-ablative resurfacing used for rejuvenation and tightening of the skin does not involve damage to the upper layers.

Is it possible to come for resurfacing a month after treatment with systemic retinoids?

A dermatologist at the K+31 center answers: “No. I recommend that you undergo laser resurfacing of the face no earlier than six months after completing a course of treatment with Roaccutane or other systemic retinoids.” You can sign up for the procedure online. To do this, you will need to fill out an application form. Prices for laser resurfacing in Moscow can be found on the clinic’s website and by phone.
