What is scalp peeling?

Professional scalp peeling is a safe and effective method, the purpose of which is to deeply cleanse and renew the upper layer of the scalp. The scalp cleansing process involves the use of acidic mixtures, such as salicylic, lactic or fruit acids, mechanical means with small granules for the delicate removal of dead skin cells.

The scrubbing procedure takes 40-50 minutes and is performed by a trichologist or cosmetologist. Regularly performing the procedure for 3 months reduces the manifestations of seborrhea by 60% and reduces hair loss by 35%.

What is scalp peeling?

Types of scalp peeling

There are five main types of scalp peeling: mechanical, chemical, enzyme, laser and cryopeeling. The table provides a brief description of each of them.

Chemical peeling is considered the most optimal for the scalp. It is prescribed in 45% of cases. The effectiveness of the method in the treatment of dandruff and seborrhea reaches 80% after 4-6 procedures. Mechanical cleansing is in second place in popularity. It is prescribed to 30% of patients, some of whom perform the procedure at home.

General information about the procedure

How does peeling work?

Peeling cleanses the scalp from impurities, removes dead cells and excess sebum, activates blood circulation, which helps strengthen hair and improve its growth. After mechanical peeling, blood flow in the scalp increases by 35-40%, which improves the nutrition of hair follicles.

Enzyme cleansing involves the use of enzymes to break down protein bonds between cells. The technique is suitable for sensitive skin, as it acts gently and minimizes the risk of irritation.

Peeling not only cleanses the skin, but also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Regular professional cleansing increases hair density by 15-20% within 3-6 months.

Result of the scalp peeling procedure

After professional cleaning, patients receive:

  • Reduction in scalp oiliness
  • Increased hair density
  • Reduction in dandruff and seborrhea symptoms
  • Improved blood microcirculation in the skin

Peeling removes sebaceous plugs, deeply cleanses the skin from impurities and residues of styling products. As a result, the functions of the sebaceous glands are normalized, hair stays fresh longer. After a course of peelings, the interval between hair washing increases by an average of 1-2 days.

To achieve maximum effect, regular cleansing is necessary. The optimal frequency is 1-2 times a month for normal scalp and up to 3 times a month for increased oiliness. A full course of 6-8 procedures provides a long-term result that lasts for 3-4 months.

Indications for scalp peeling

Indications for professional cleaning include:

  • Dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis
  • High oiliness of the scalp
  • Itching, inflammation of the skin
  • Loss of shine and brittleness of hair
  • Dryness and flaking of the skin

Peeling ensures better penetration of nutrients from masks and other care products. Hair becomes softer, more voluminous and shiny.

Contraindications

There are absolute and relative contraindications to scalp cleansing. Absolute contraindications include:

  • Open cuts, scratches and other damage to the skin
  • Acute inflammations on the skin
  • Fungal and bacterial diseases
  • Skin lesions

Relative contraindications require prior consultation with a trichologist or dermatologist. Among them:

  • Increased skin sensitivity
  • Allergic reactions to the components used during peeling
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding (due to the possibility of active substances entering the systemic bloodstream)

Cleansing the scalp with open lesions increases the risk of infection. Peeling is contraindicated before or after chemical hair care procedures. To avoid increased skin sensitivity, it is recommended to take a break of 7-10 days between dyeing, perming, keratin restoration, and scrubbing.

In case of psoriasis and eczema, a consultation with a dermatologist is also required before professional peeling. He will individually select the composition and concentration of active substances, taking into account the skin condition and the possible risk of exacerbation of the disease.

Answers to popular questions

Doctors at the K+31 clinic answered the most frequently asked questions about scalp peeling.

How often can you do scalp peeling?

A trichologist answers: “The frequency of procedures depends on the individual characteristics of the skin and the type of peeling chosen. Superficial peeling is recommended to be done 1-2 times a week. Medium peeling can be done once every 2-3 weeks. Deep peeling should be done no more than once every 1-2 months. It is important to remember that frequent peeling has a negative effect on the protective layer of the scalp.”

Can you do scalp peeling on colored hair?

“Yes, scalp peeling can be done on colored hair. It is important to wait at least 7-10 days after dyeing, choose enzyme or soft mechanical peels. A properly selected peeling composition does not have a harmful effect on hair color, improves its durability, and facilitates the uniform distribution of pigment during subsequent dyeing by 25-30%. To preserve the color and quality of your hair as much as possible, after cleansing I always recommend using shampoos and conditioners for colored hair, masks to restore the structure, and heat-protective sprays.” — the dermatocosmetologist answers.
