Types of mouth guards

There are several types of dental trainers. They differ in the production method, functional purpose, design and volume.

In particular, mouth guards are intended for:

For lightening

For lightening. The lightening composition is inside the trainer. They are put on the teeth for a set time (15-60 minutes). A special composition promotes the decomposition of pigments in the enamel, as a result of which the teeth become lighter. Such designs are not able to correct deep color defects associated with injuries, medication and heredity. Sometimes wearing them causes increased tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.

For teeth correction

For teeth correction. They are intended to correct bite and defects in the arrangement of chewing elements. These structures are also called aligners. They gradually move the teeth to the desired position. They should be replaced every few weeks. The treatment process can last from several months to 2 years.

To protect teeth

For dental protection. Used to prevent damage to teeth during sports. Such designs cushion impacts and reduce the risk of injury to the jaw, joints, gums and tongue. Such products can be unaesthetic and uncomfortable to wear. They require regular cleaning and disinfection.

To stabilize teeth

For stabilizing teeth. Retainers (stabilizers) are used to maintain teeth in a new position after treatment with braces (and other orthodontic structures). Their main task is to prevent teeth from shifting and return them to their original position. Depending on the complexity of the case, trainers must be worn constantly or periodically, for several months or years.

For fluoridation

For fluoridation. Fluoride-filled elastomers fit tightly to the teeth. They help strengthen the enamel and protect against harmful effects.

Some designs are used for bruxism. Wearing such trainers reduces the load on the jaw, protects teeth from decay and reduces muscle pain. The products are put on at night and taken off in the morning.

Features of bite correction with the help of mouth guards

Aligners/trainers are removable orthodontic devices designed to correct the position of teeth and normalize the bite. These devices accurately repeat the contour of the dentition.

Aligners fit tightly to the teeth, exerting pressure on them. They are manufactured in series, taking into account individual characteristics. The size of each subsequent copy is slightly different from the previous one.

The correction process with their help is based on the creation of targeted pressure. As a result, the teeth move in the bone structure of the jaws in a certain direction.

General information

The production of a trainer involves the use of specialized universal polymerizers and vacuum formers.

Before ordering a dental structure, the patient consults with a doctor. Then the specialist sanitizes the oral cavity: before producing a personalized mouthguard, dental deposits (plaque, tartar) are removed.

The next steps are as follows:

  1. Formation of impressions of both jaws. The resulting molds (casting forms) provide data on the bite, occlusion (the way the teeth close together) and other important parameters necessary to create the desired model
  2. Production of mouthguards. Based on the impression, a working model of the aligner is created
  3. Trying on. The patient is invited to the dentistry and tries on the mouthguard in the doctor's office. If everything is fine, the specialist helps him to fix the product

If there are problems with the aligner, an alternative treatment option is chosen.

During the teeth alignment process, the patient replaces the aligners themselves every 2 weeks. Visits to the dentist are required every 2-3 months. In this case, the doctor:

  • Examines the oral cavity, cleans the teeth if necessary
  • Analyzes changes and evaluates the progress of treatment
  • Provides a new set of caps

During the entire course of treatment, 25 to 60 caps may be required.

Using dental aligners to straighten teeth has several advantages. The main advantages are as follows:

  • Aesthetics. Due to the transparency of the caps, they are practically invisible. Due to the thinness of the material (0.3 mm), the aligners remain unnoticeable even at close range. They do not affect speech
  • Ease of use. The aligners are easy to remove and put on, without causing discomfort or injury to the mucous membrane. They are easy to care for: just rinse them under running water. Maintaining oral hygiene with aligners is no different from normal: special brushes (irrigators) required when wearing braces are not required in this case
  • Comfortable to wear. The design of the caps does not injure the gums and soft tissues. Thanks to this, you can quickly get used to them. The first improvements can be seen after a few months

Unfortunately, aligners are not able to correct complex defects. If the patient does not wear the aligners regularly, the treatment process drags on for several years. In addition, their cost is quite high.

Views of K+31 specialists on the need for regular wearing of retention caps

"These devices are similar to active aligners, but they are not designed to move teeth, but to maintain them in the correct position.

Retention trays must be worn strictly according to the schedule recommended by the orthodontist. This will help to avoid relapses and displacement of teeth back to their original position. Neglecting these recommendations leads to the need for repeated treatment. This is especially true in cases where patients do not wear trainers at night or do so irregularly.

Even short breaks in the use of retention trainers provoke a noticeable displacement of the chewing elements. Therefore, at the first signs of malposition of the teeth, you should not postpone a visit to a specialist. In addition, it is imperative to adhere to all instructions for caring for and wearing the trainers. This is what ensures long-term stability of the orthodontic result."

In our clinic (Moscow), you can order the manufacture of trays and use other services. To make an appointment at the dentist's office, use the application form. Ask our manager about the price of installing mouth guards at the dentist's office.
