Manual therapy: what is it?

Manual therapy involves therapeutic and mechanical effects necessary to restore the functions of the musculoskeletal system. The positive properties of the technique include:

  • Reducing tension and increasing muscle elasticity
  • Reducing pain
  • Strengthening the muscular frame
  • Releasing compressed nerve fibers and blood vessels
  • Restoring mobility of joints and spine
  • Hernia correction
  • Reduction or elimination of spinal curvature
  • Improving blood circulation and nutrition of intervertebral disc tissue

Unlike conventional massage, manual therapy affects not only muscle tissue, but also all components of the musculoskeletal system. Thanks to this, the position of the vertebrae and nerve endings is corrected, which improves the functioning of internal organs and the body as a whole. Manual therapy is actively used in the fields of neurology, orthopedics and neurophysiology as an effective means to alleviate the condition of patients.

Manual therapy: what is it?
Indications for manual medicine

Manual therapy is indicated for:

  • Frequent headaches, including migraines, vertigo, tinnitus
  • Muscle strain
  • Pain syndromes in the neck, shoulders, elbows, knees, lower back, spreading to the lower extremities
  • Pain caused by pinched nerve endings, including pain in the sciatic nerve
  • Numbness of arms and legs
  • Limited motor activity and stiffness in joints and different parts of the spine
  • Problems maintaining balance
  • Osteochondrosis, disc protrusions, herniated discs
  • Disturbances in the functioning of organs in the pelvic area

This treatment method is often prescribed to patients who are at the rehabilitation stage after injuries or operations. The procedure is also useful for those who lead a sedentary lifestyle and are at risk of developing spinal diseases.

Prolonged work at the computer in one position leads to overstrain of the neck muscles and causes pinching of blood vessels, which is accompanied by headaches, as well as discomfort in the cervical spine. Untreated spasm in a timely manner slows down blood flow and metabolic processes, reduces nutrition of the joints, and leads to loss of their flexibility. As a result, osteochondrosis develops, mobility is limited, and vertebral deformities occur.

Contraindications

Manual therapy has a number of limitations:

  • Presence of malignant neoplasms
  • Condition after a heart attack
  • Thrombosis of the vertebral arteries
  • Ischemic spinal stroke
  • Infectious lung diseases
  • Purulent-necrotic processes in bones and bone marrow
  • Inflammation of the brain
  • Decreased bone density
  • Hypertension

In addition, it is prohibited to conduct sessions for patients with emotional instability, including aggression and apathy.

General information

How is an appointment with a chiropractor

A visit to a chiropractor begins with detailed collection of information about the patient’s health. It includes:

  • Current complaints
  • Lifestyle
  • Presence of chronic diseases
  • Clarification of how and when unpleasant symptoms occurred, what injuries were present, etc.

Then the doctor conducts a thorough examination of the patient in standing and lying positions, after which he issues directions for the necessary diagnostic procedures. In some cases, patients are recommended to consult a neurologist or other specialized specialists.

Diagnostics

As part of the diagnosis, the following are carried out:

  • Reflexology and work with bioactive points
  • Palpation of the bony joints of the skull
  • Massage of deep muscle layers
  • Laboratory tests of blood and urine
  • Radiography
  • Ultrasound
  • Electroneuromyography
  • CT and MRI
  • Checking neuromuscular conduction

The specifics and number of manual therapy sessions are selected individually and usually range from 4 to 6 procedures.

Types of manual complexes

Manual therapy includes the following areas:

  • Myofascial treatment, the purpose of which is to work with the skin, subcutaneous fatty tissue, ligaments and muscles
  • Arthro-vertebral method, aimed at treating joints and intervertebral discs
  • Cranial therapy. Correction of cranial bones to reduce headaches and dizziness, stabilize intracranial pressure and improve cerebral circulation
  • Visceral technique. Used to treat diseases of internal organs and correct neurological disorders

Many patients wonder whether massage is considered a type of manual therapy. Thai massage can be classified as manual therapy, but it focuses more on the energy lines of the body, as opposed to traditional manual therapy, which focuses on the muscles and joints, circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Possible side effects

The main undesirable effect is pain. It bothers 20% of patients after the first procedure due to changes in motor activity. The pain usually goes away within the first 24 hours.

Rarer negative consequences include:

  • Increase in body temperature, which signals the presence of inflammatory processes in the body
  • Dizziness with concomitant diseases
  • Blood pressure surges

Before starting treatment, it is necessary to inform the therapist about the tendency to high blood pressure. Preliminary diagnosis helps reduce all potential risks.

Prevention of musculoskeletal diseases

Prevention involves a number of actions:

  • Regular exercise to strengthen your muscles and maintain joint flexibility
  • Maintaining optimal body weight to reduce stress on joints and spine
  • Proper nutrition enriched with calcium and vitamin D to strengthen bone tissue
  • Avoiding injuries and overexertion during sports and in everyday life
  • Control of posture when sitting at a workplace and the use of ergonomic furniture
  • Regular changes in body position during prolonged work at the computer
  • Using orthopedic insoles if you have problems with your feet or flat feet

An important rule for women and girls is to limit wearing high-heeled shoes.
