Laser treatment

Laser coloproctology is a modern method of treating proctological diseases, which is based on the use of laser surgery. Laser equipment has been successfully used to remove, cauterize or vaporize dotted areas of tissue.

The method is widely used in proctology for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. With the help of a laser beam, doctors can point to the affected areas of the mucosa without affecting healthy tissues. This method of treatment is considered minimally invasive, so it is chosen for proctological operations with a short recovery period.

A surgical laser is a medical device capable of converting light energy (or electromagnetic radiation) into laser radiation that affects pathological processes. The flow of photons provokes the heating of tissues, which leads to their destruction and evaporation.

Indications for use

The technique is successfully used for the treatment and prevention of such diseases:

  • Hemorrhoids (internal/external).
  • Anal fissures.
  • Anorectal and rectovaginal fistulas.
  • Paraproctitis.
  • Hemorrhoidal fringes.

Under the influence of a laser beam, the specialist carries out coagulation of hemorrhoids, excision of anal fissures, closure of fistulas, as well as elimination of various pathological formations of the perianal region.

The main advantage of laser surgery is that this treatment method is minimally invasive. The operation takes place under general (in rare cases - under local) anesthesia, during which the person falls asleep and does not feel any discomfort.

A few hours after the completion of the operation, the patient goes home. After laser treatment of proctological pathologies, the patient goes on sick leave, which can last from several days to 2 weeks. During the recovery period, the patient comes for examinations to a coloproctologist-surgeon, who controls the process of tissue healing.

Advantages of the technique

Laser surgery in proctology is in high demand as a method of treatment and diagnosis of common pathologies. Compared with conservative methods of treating hemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, the laser technique is characterized by the following features:

  1. High efficiency of treatment at different stages of pathology development.
  2. The possibility of successful treatment with a combination of hemorrhoids and other pathologies of the rectum.
  3. Short operation time (up to 30 minutes).
  4. Carrying out the procedure on an outpatient basis (in the clinic).
  5. Possibility to leave the clinic a few hours after the completion of the operation.
  6. Short and painless recovery period.

Before performing a proctological operation using a laser, the patient is expected to undergo a preparatory stage and preoperative preparation. The first stage can take up to 3 weeks, the second lasts for a day before laser treatment of the pathology.

The first stage may consist of the following preparatory steps:

  • Therapy of concomitant pathologies, elimination of the inflammatory process.
  • Carrying out diagnostic measures, including functional diagnostics.
  • Medical consultations of specialists from related fields of medicine.

In the preoperative period, direct preparation for laser treatment is carried out. The day before the operation, the patient is prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, antibacterial agents, as well as agents to reduce postoperative risks.

If the situation does not allow to prepare for the operation, the preoperative stage is excluded. Provided that the patient will not be able to carry out a full-fledged stage of recovery, surgery takes place in stage 2. First, the specialist minimally affects the pathological focus with a laser, after which, the patient can lead a normal life after a day.

How is the operation

Before performing laser surgery in the field of proctology, the patient may be offered several options for anesthesia: local anesthesia (infiltration), spinal (epidural) or general anesthesia (intravenous or mask anesthesia).

The operation usually takes up to 30 minutes. In some cases, the procedure can last for 45-90 minutes.

Depending on the nature and stage of development of the pathology, the surgeon can apply various methods of surgical treatment:

  • Photoablation.
  • Photovaporization.
  • Photodenaturation.
  • Photodestruction.
  • Photocoagulation.

After the operation, surgical sutures are not applied. After 2-3 hours, the patient leaves the clinic and goes home, entering the recovery period.

Laser surgery in the field of proctology is a very popular technique that allows you to qualitatively and quickly treat a large list of proctological diseases without complex surgical operations, significant blood loss and a long rehabilitation period.
